This is a 5 dollar Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coin in beautiful AU (“about uncirculated”) condition. This coin has spent its life protected in a plastic pouch. I removed it only to take the pictures/ I have tried to capture the light reflection on the coin in such a way that you can see for yourself the great condition of this 112 year old gold coin. This coin is true Americana, designed by Christian Golbrecht, and features the beloved Miss Liberty bust on the obverse with her coronet headband, surrounded by 13 stars representing the 13 original colonies of the United States. The reverse features the majestic bald eagle with wings outspread, proudly showing the American shield on his chest. Above the eagle is a flowing banner with the inscription “In God we Trust.” This motto was added to the coin’s design beginning in 1866. The eagle is holding an olive branch in one talon and 3 arrows in the other, symbolizing the power of peace and war. The eagle is symbolically looking in the direction of peace. The coin’s edge has a reeded design. Many of these coins were melted down years ago when the value of gold began to exceed the face value of the coin itself. The Liberty Head has been a very popular item for gold coin lovers and collectors since, apart from the wonderful design, it contains almost a quarter ounce of gold.
